Does anybody know when the last time the top four-ranked players on the
West Coast were all from someplace other than Southern California? I bring
this up, because none of Dinos Trigonis’ top four-ranked seniors - 6′9
Terrance Jones from Portland (Jefferson) OR, 6′9 Tristan Thompson from
Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV, 6′3 Cory Joseph from Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV, and
6′9 Josh Smith from Covington (Kentwood) WA – call Southern California
home. However, the senior class in Southern California is not as bad as we
originally thought, as a lot of players in the class have developed later than
usual and, as a result, there are as many as 16 players in the class that
we will consider ranking among our top 100 seniors nationally when we
publish our Final Ranking of the Top Players Nationally in the Class of 2010 in
the spring. In addition to the four aforementioned players, this list
includes a plethora of athletic wing players, like 6′2 Gary Franklin from Santa
Ana (Mater Dei) CA, 6′5 Tyler Lamb from Santa Ana (Mater Dei) CA, 6′5
Anthony Brown from Huntington Beach (Ocean View) CA, 6′5 Keala King from Santa
Ana (Mater Dei) CA, 6′5 Bryce Jones from Woodland Hills (Taft) CA, 6′5
Allen Crabbe from Los Angeles (Price) CA, 6′5 Daniel Bejarano from Phoenix
(North) AZ, 6′2 Royce Woolridge from Phoenix (Sunnyslope) AZ, and 6′2 Jordin
Mayes from Los Angeles (Westchester) CA; a pair of rapidly developing power
forwards in 6′9 James Johnson from Wildomar (Elisnore) CA and 6′9 Richard
Solomon from Los Angeles (Price) CA; and undervalued point guard in 6′2
Deonta Burton from Compton (Centennial) CA, who also happens to be one of the
top three players on this list who is still available.
We also continue to be amazed at how many of the scouts on the West Coast
are still missing on 6′2 Gary Franklin from Santa Ana (Mater Dei) CA, who is
ranked #23 nationally in the senior class and is one of the best 3-point
shooters to come down the pike in a long time. Franklin also is a
tremendous competitor, the team he plays on usually wins, and he continues to
improve his athleticism, which makes him an absolute steal for the University of
California. But, then again, what do you expect from the same people who
missed on Brandon Jennings and thought Jerime Anderson was going to be the
second coming? Not falling into this category of course is our West Coast
Editor Dinos Trigonis, who has put together what is arguably the best and
the most in-depth player list that has ever been published with regards to
high school basketball on the West Coast. Not only does Trigonis have
Franklin listed as the highest ranked player from Southern California, but he
also includes Franklin as the 5th Player on the First Team.
The top ranked player on the West Coast in the junior class is 6′5 Jr Tony
Wroten from Seattle (Garfield) WA. But after that things return to normal
as the next five players on the list – 6′8 Jr DeAndre Daniels from
Woodland Hills (Taft) CA, 6′3 Jr Josiah Turner from Sacramento (H.S.) CA, 6′9 Jr
Norvel Pelle from Los Angeles (Price) CA, 6′0 Jr Cezar Guerrero from
Bellflower (St. John Bosco) CA, and 6′8 Jr Angelo Chol from San Diego (Hoover) CA -
are all from California. And Trigonis give special mention to Daniels,
who he thinks has the talent, athleticism, and upside necessary to be a pro,
and Turner, who has been putting up prolific numbers this winter and, at
the same time, has the ball handling and passing skills, court vision, and
speed and quickness necessary to evolve into the next great point guard on
the West Coast.
The sophomore class features two of our top five-ranked players in the
nationally in 6′5 Soph Shabazz Muhammed and from Las Vegas (Bishop Gorman) NV
and 6′7 Soph Winston Sheppard from Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV. And,
believe it or not, one of the two players (Muhammed) is a native of Las Vegas,
NV. Did you know that basketball factory in the desert (Findlay Prep) that
has emerged into one of the premier basketball programs in the nation in
recent years can accept in-state players for admission into school?
However, it’s the freshman class that really gets us excited. A quick look
at our national rankings shows that a number of players, like 6′3 Frosh
Nigel Williams-Goss from Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV, 6′5 Frosh Derrick
Fenner from Seattle (Prep) WA, 6′6 Frosh Aaron Gordon from San Jose (Archbishop
Mitty) CA, 6′2 Frosh Eric Cooper from La Verne (Lutheran) CA, 6′3 Frosh
Isaac Hamilton from Los Angeles (Crenshaw) CA, 6′5 Frosh Roschon Prince from
Long Beach (Poly) CA, 6′3 Frosh Tyree Robinson from San Diego (Lincoln) CA,
6′3 Frosh Tyrel Robinson from San Diego (Lincoln) CA, 6′3 Frosh Bryan
Velasco from San Juan Capistrano (J. Serra) CA, 6′1 Frosh Chance Murray from
Los Angeles (Price) CA, 6′8 Frosh Torren Jones from Chandler (Basha) AZ, 6′5
Frosh Payton Banks from Orange (Lutheran) CA, 6′0 Frosh Malik Thames from

have already established their national reputation. Plus, Trigonis also
some new under the radar names, like 5′11 Frosh Ikenna Iroegbu from Elk Grove
(Franklin) CA, 6′7 Frosh Maurice Kirby from Flagstaff (H.S.) AZ, and 6′4
Frosh Nick Colletta from La Verne (Lutheran) CA, on his list.
We also decided to include 10 players, instead of just five, on our First
Team All-Time All West Coast Team. And I think it’s important to point
out that this team is based on accomplishment in high school and not
necessarily where a player ended up in college or in the pros. Thus, explains why
Bill Russell is not included on the 10-man first team. Did you know that
Russell was ignored by college scouts and did not receive a single letter of
interest until Hal DeJulio from the University of San Francisco watched
him play in a high school game when he was a senior at Oakland (McClymonds)
CA? “DeJulis was not impressed by Russell’s meager scoring and atrocious
fundamentals, but sensed that the young center had an extraordinary instinct
for the game, especially in clutch situations,” says wikipedia.org. And
from there the list of great players who did not make the First Team is
almost endless, as it includes names like Bill Cartwright, Jamaal “Keith”
Wilkes, Curtis Rowe, Kiki Vandeweghe, Richard Washington, Ed O’Bannon, Tyson
Chandler, Tayshaun Prince, Paul Pierce, Schea Cotton, Baron Davis, Danny
Ainge, Don MacLean, Phil Chenier, Willie Naulls, Reggie Theus, Chris Mills,
Clifford Allen, Kyle Singler, et al..

Does anybody know when the last time the top four-ranked players on the
West Coast were all from someplace other than Southern California? I bring
this up, because none of Dinos Trigonis’ top four-ranked seniors - 6′9
Terrance Jones from Portland (Jefferson) OR, 6′9 Tristan Thompson from
Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV, 6′3 Cory Joseph from Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV, and
6′9 Josh Smith from Covington (Kentwood) WA – call Southern California
home. However, the senior class in Southern California is not as bad as we
originally thought, as a lot of players in the class have developed later than
usual and, as a result, there are as many as 16 players in the class that
we will consider ranking among our top 100 seniors nationally when we
publish our Final Ranking of the Top Players Nationally in the Class of 2010 in
the spring. In addition to the four aforementioned players, this list
includes a plethora of athletic wing players, like 6′2 Gary Franklin from Santa
Ana (Mater Dei) CA, 6′5 Tyler Lamb from Santa Ana (Mater Dei) CA, 6′5
Anthony Brown from Huntington Beach (Ocean View) CA, 6′5 Keala King from Santa
Ana (Mater Dei) CA, 6′5 Bryce Jones from Woodland Hills (Taft) CA, 6′5
Allen Crabbe from Los Angeles (Price) CA, 6′5 Daniel Bejarano from Phoenix
(North) AZ, 6′2 Royce Woolridge from Phoenix (Sunnyslope) AZ, and 6′2 Jordin
Mayes from Los Angeles (Westchester) CA; a pair of rapidly developing power
forwards in 6′9 James Johnson from Wildomar (Elisnore) CA and 6′9 Richard
Solomon from Los Angeles (Price) CA; and undervalued point guard in 6′2
Deonta Burton from Compton (Centennial) CA, who also happens to be one of the
top three players on this list who is still available.
We also continue to be amazed at how many of the scouts on the West Coast
are still missing on 6′2 Gary Franklin from Santa Ana (Mater Dei) CA, who is
ranked #23 nationally in the senior class and is one of the best 3-point
shooters to come down the pike in a long time. Franklin also is a
tremendous competitor, the team he plays on usually wins, and he continues to
improve his athleticism, which makes him an absolute steal for the University of
California. But, then again, what do you expect from the same people who
missed on Brandon Jennings and thought Jerime Anderson was going to be the
second coming? Not falling into this category of course is our West Coast
Editor Dinos Trigonis, who has put together what is arguably the best and
the most in-depth player list that has ever been published with regards to
high school basketball on the West Coast. Not only does Trigonis have
Franklin listed as the highest ranked player from Southern California, but he
also includes Franklin as the 5th Player on the First Team.
The top ranked player on the West Coast in the junior class is 6′5 Jr Tony
Wroten from Seattle (Garfield) WA. But after that things return to normal
as the next five players on the list – 6′8 Jr DeAndre Daniels from
Woodland Hills (Taft) CA, 6′3 Jr Josiah Turner from Sacramento (H.S.) CA, 6′9 Jr
Norvel Pelle from Los Angeles (Price) CA, 6′0 Jr Cezar Guerrero from
Bellflower (St. John Bosco) CA, and 6′8 Jr Angelo Chol from San Diego (Hoover) CA -
are all from California. And Trigonis give special mention to Daniels,
who he thinks has the talent, athleticism, and upside necessary to be a pro,
and Turner, who has been putting up prolific numbers this winter and, at
the same time, has the ball handling and passing skills, court vision, and
speed and quickness necessary to evolve into the next great point guard on
the West Coast.
The sophomore class features two of our top five-ranked players in the
nationally in 6′5 Soph Shabazz Muhammed and from Las Vegas (Bishop Gorman) NV
and 6′7 Soph Winston Sheppard from Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV. And,
believe it or not, one of the two players (Muhammed) is a native of Las Vegas,
NV. Did you know that basketball factory in the desert (Findlay Prep) that
has emerged into one of the premier basketball programs in the nation in
recent years can accept in-state players for admission into school?
However, it’s the freshman class that really gets us excited. A quick look
at our national rankings shows that a number of players, like 6′3 Frosh
Nigel Williams-Goss from Henderson (Findlay Prep) NV, 6′5 Frosh Derrick
Fenner from Seattle (Prep) WA, 6′6 Frosh Aaron Gordon from San Jose (Archbishop
Mitty) CA, 6′2 Frosh Eric Cooper from La Verne (Lutheran) CA, 6′3 Frosh
Isaac Hamilton from Los Angeles (Crenshaw) CA, 6′5 Frosh Roschon Prince from
Long Beach (Poly) CA, 6′3 Frosh Tyree Robinson from San Diego (Lincoln) CA,
6′3 Frosh Tyrel Robinson from San Diego (Lincoln) CA, 6′3 Frosh Bryan
Velasco from San Juan Capistrano (J. Serra) CA, 6′1 Frosh Chance Murray from

Frosh Nick Colletta from La Verne (Lutheran) CA, on his list.
We also decided to include 10 players, instead of just five, on our First
Team All-Time All West Coast Team. And I think it’s important to point
out that this team is based on accomplishment in high school and not
necessarily where a player ended up in college or in the pros. Thus, explains why
Bill Russell is not included on the 10-man first team. Did you know that
Russell was ignored by college scouts and did not receive a single letter of
interest until Hal DeJulio from the University of San Francisco watched
him play in a high school game when he was a senior at Oakland (McClymonds)
CA? “DeJulis was not impressed by Russell’s meager scoring and atrocious
fundamentals, but sensed that the young center had an extraordinary instinct
for the game, especially in clutch situations,” says wikipedia.org. And
from there the list of great players who did not make the First Team is
almost endless, as it includes names like Bill Cartwright, Jamaal “Keith”
Wilkes, Curtis Rowe, Kiki Vandeweghe, Richard Washington, Ed O’Bannon, Tyson
Chandler, Tayshaun Prince, Paul Pierce, Schea Cotton, Baron Davis, Danny
Ainge, Don MacLean, Phil Chenier, Willie Naulls, Reggie Theus, Chris Mills,
Clifford Allen, Kyle Singler, et al..
