Trigonis Tidbits:
Potts Emerges as a Hot Spring Recruit
(March 1, 2011)
6’2” senior combo-guard Davon Potts (Gahr/Cerritos CA) is having a terrific senior season, leading his 23-7 Gladiator squad to the brink of a CIF championship – Gahr takes on Mayfair (Lakewood CA) in the CIF 2-A title game next Saturday night (8pm) at the Anaheim Arena. Potts has averaged 22.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season but his last two performances have been truly indicative of his rapidly climbing value as a prospect. In Gahr’s 71-70 semi-final win over Foothill (Santa Ana CA), Potts poured in 32 points to spark his team to victory while in his squad’s quarter-final contest versus JW North (Riverside CA) Potts pumped in 33 points to lead his Gladiators to the “W” (71-63). Other top efforts for Potts this year include his season-high 34 point outburst against Sonora (La Habra CA) and 32 points versus Lynwood (Lynwood CA). Potts is a deadly outside shooter when hot, can beat defenders to the rack off the bounce and can really push the rock in transition. While Air Force and UC-Davis are currently among the schools involved with Potts, look for his recruitment to skyrocket as there is a lack of quality of lead guards still on the board and his stock is rising fast. Basketball Writers Hall of Fame member and McDonald’s All-American Game voter Frank Burlison (Long Beach Press-Telegram) is among the growing persons acknowledging Potts’ improvement and accomplishments this season – currently calling Potts a “high-major” prospect……………….Speaking of lead guards, three of Southern California’s top senior playmakers made college decisions recently. 5’9” Jordan Daniels (Etiwanda/Etiwanda CA) picked Boston College, 5’9” Austin McBroom (Campbell Hall/North Hollywood CA) chose Central Michigan and 6’2” Camryon Crocker (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos CA) selected Penn. Daniels is an excellent floor general that runs Etiwanda’s offense efficiently and is a threat to knock down 3-point shots if left open, McBroom is a high-octane scoring guard that can really light up the scoreboard and a long-time buddy of current Central Michigan freshman star Trey Ziegler and Crocker is a lefty playmaker that is a fine passer and improved shooter with excellent academics…………. A high scoring Nevada point guard also made a recent college decision. 5’9” senior Dantley Walker (Lincoln County NV) has committed to UNLV but will take a 2 year Mormon mission before becoming a Rebel freshman in the Fall of 2013. Walker (Nevada’s state scoring leader at 35.6 ppg) made headlines earlier this year when he scored a state-record 73 points against Agassi Prep (Las Vegas NV)…………….The West Coast’s and nation’s top unsigned senior point guard (according to Rivals.com’s Jerry Meyer, ESPN.com’s Dave Telep and Hot100Hoops.com’s Van Coleman) visited Oklahoma State last weekend. That was 6’0” Cezar Guerrero’s 3rdofficial visit – having checked out Oklahoma a few weeks ago and Western Kentucky last September. Besides past trips to Bowling Green KY, Norman OK and Stillwater OK, Guerrero is scheduled to visit Iowa next weekend. Schools in contention to land his 5thand final official visit are Kansas, Marquette, Florida State, BYU, West Virginia, Seton Hall, New Mexico State and New Mexico. Cezar (who was also offered this year by Wake Forest, Oregon State, UC-Irvine and TCU) has been invited (along with Belmont Shore teammate DeAndre Daniels) to compete in the National High School Dunk & 3-point Championships which will be held during Final Four festivities in Houston TX (Friday April 1st) and will be aired on national TV (CBS) on Sunday April 3rdat 1:30pm-3:00pm (PST). Guerrero and Daniels will be among 8 players from across the nation that will compete in the 3-point shootout.….…………Another top senior point guard 5’9” Chris Anderson (Canyon/Anaheim CA) is seeing increased interest in his future services. Schools at the top of his list include San Diego and UC-Irvine………………Other top SoCal unsigned lead guards (points and combos) still on the board include 6’2” Clayton Ragsdale (Corona del Mar/Newport Beach CA), 6’2” Dylan Garrity (Edison/Huntington Beach CA), 6’0” Joseph Soto (Rio Mesa/Oxnard CA), 6’2” Darnel Taylor (Crenshaw/Los Angeles CA), 6’1” Johnny Dee (Rancho Buena Vista/Vista CA), 6’0” Kevin Smith (Centennial/Compton CA), 5’8” Allen Guei (Compton/Compton CA), 6’3” Victor Jones (Lakewood/Lakewood CA), 5’10” Max Heller (Torrey Pines/San Diego CA), 6’0” Billy Keller (Ocean View/Huntington Beach CA), 5’9” Chris Brown (Washington/Los Angeles CA), 6’1” John Gilliam (Upland/Upland CA), 6’1” Darrius Middleton (Montebello/Montebello CA), 5’10” Khiry Williams (Taft/Woodland Hills CA), 6’3” Joe Stein (Loyola/Los Angeles CA), 6’1” Jordan Fuller (Alemany/North Hills CA), 6’2” Alex Perez (Otay Ranch/Chula Vista CA), 6’2” Evan Jenkins (Etiwanda/Etiwanda CA), 6’1” KJ Smith (Campbell Hall/North Hollywood CA), 5’9” Brandon Moore (Carson/Carson CA), 5’8” Conway James (JW North/Riverside CA), 6’1” James Northup (Bonita/La Verne CA) and 5’10” Andre Darville (JSerra/San Juan Capistratio CA)…………….I was in Berkeley recently to catch a Bay Area showdown between Salesian (Richmond CA) and St. Mary’s (Berkeley CA). There were several outstanding players in that contest, but three that stood out were 5’10” junior Dominic Artis (Salesian), 6’5” soph Jabari Byrd (Salesian) and 6’7” junior David Andoh (St. Mary’s). Artis is emerging as California’s top 2012 point guard prospect and his play that night gave me flashbacks of a young Baron Davis. Dominic’s is extremely crafty and his basketball IQ is off the charts. Combine those intangibles with an excellent reaction to the ball and his ability to create for himself as well as teammates makes him a growth spurt away from being a special player. Byrd is a skywalking athlete with a jump shot to match and his upside is scary to say the least. Andoh is one of the West Coast’s top 2012 high-major sleepers and his potent inside-outside scoring skills make him a versatile prospect worth taking a long look at this upcoming summer. Others that impressed that night were 6’3” junior Glen Baral (St. Mary’s) and 6’2” senior Bryce Thompson (Salesian)……………6’4” sophomore Eric Cooper Jr. (La Verne Lutheran/La Verne CA) is slowly rounding back into shape after essentially being less than 100% since the end of summer 2009. Battling a knee injury that has hobbled him since then, Cooper had a solid soph season this year and projects to be at full strength by the end of the spring. People tend to forget that Cooper (who committed toArizona with HS teammate Grant Jerrett last November) was once a promising rising freshman who had attracted offers from most of the Pac-10’s programs prior to enrolling in high school. Look for him to get back on that high-major track this upcoming summer…………….Jim Nielsen has been re-named the head coach at Cabrillo HS (Long Beach CA) after taking a year off this past season. The former Washington State player was also a long-time coach at Redondo Union and Mira Costa high schools (as well as an assistant at Pepperdine under Paul Westphal) before taking over the helm at Cabrillo in 2008 (led the Jaguars to a team record 16 wins and 1st-ever CIF play-off berth in 2009-10)………….On Monday March 7th, the Fullcourt Press website will reveal it’s totally remodeled site that we hope will make it easier for visitors to navigate and better organized to find the information they need quicker. Since we just reached the 3 million hit mark after we went online just 5 years ago, we thought it was time for a make-over. We hope that like you like the new layout. * The existing site will be “down” starting 8pm PST on Sunday March 6th until 8am Monday March 7th for the rennovation. Thank’s for your continued support!
