The 2011 ranking will surprise many as I have listed 6’7 Findlay Prep’s Amir Garrett(St. Johns commit) over Findlay Prep’s 6’3+ Nick Johnson(Arizona commit). Without taking anything away from Nick Johnson’s potential pro abilities, Garrett upside, motor and continued progression from a face up 4 man to now a bona-fide wing scorer with fast twitch bounce. Garrett’s exceptional defensive abilities should land him consistent minutes in New York this fall. At 6’7 Garrett has great length, bounce and the aptitude to get better.
In the 2012 class the #1 player in the city, state and country Shabazz Muhammad has set the stage to becoming the most accomplished player to ever touch a basketball in Nevada history. Muhammad has been on a national scoring tear and has put the city of Las Vegas and the state of Nevada on his back echoing #1 from several national publications. 2012 Najee Matlock from Palo Verde is my local sleeper with blazing speed which was evident in the Las Vegas Easter Big Foot tournament. Matlock with the ball in his hands was running circles(speed wise) around high major plus recruits L.J. Rose and Rasheed Sulaimon. Talent wise Matlock is categorized as potential low major if he can develop consistency from the perimeter. Findlay Prep’s Naz Long is a long range pure shooter from 23 feet. Long has a quick release and a flicker that screams “blessed from deep.” I have him notated as a high major prospect strictly on his height, motor and ability to knock down triples at an accurate rate. Notate 2012 Ben Carter has climbed up my list since the last fall report and has been productive and consistent Vs. several top national talents. Findlay Prep’s Winston Shepard is a special basketball enigma who ranks in the top 30 nationally on several list and effects the game in so many different aspects. Triple double talent with length, a strong motor and the ability to play-make at 6’8.
There is no typo in my 2013 list. Yes, Rashad Muhammad is at the top of my list. His size, jump-shot and his unselfish play-making skills put him at the top. As Muhammad continues to gain strength his game will take another leap and bound. Rashad Muhammad, younger brother to Shabazz has a different shake to his game. Rashad is a combo guard who plays slippery and loves to knock down the 22 footer. 6’3 Nigel Goss-Williams recently de-committed from UNLV and is an exceptional floor leader and communicator. Goss-Williams has an excellent IQ, good footwork and a work horse mentality. Following Goss-Williams is Julian Jacob and Juwan Majors. Both intriguing prospects that will be hearing from several mid majors. Julian aka “Ju Ju” is a long slippery point with play making abilities. Guard Juwan Major posses excellent speed, quick first step and good touch from the perimeter. The 2012 class is the deepest national class Nevada has had in decades. To follow up the 2013 class is deeper in regards to the amount of potential scholarship student athletes. Please notate Goss-Williams has updated to #1. Williams has clearly demostrated in Adidas Nations that he is an elite point guard that knows how to get his teammates better. Exceptional IQ & motor.
Noah Robotham tops the 2014 list with an advanced floor game and a consistent shot from 22 feet. Arbor View Dionte Jones is 6’4+ and has strong upside. Jones is an big body athlete who gets taller and more polished on every look. Obim Okeke is a 5’11 well built, athletic point guard that competes and plays varsity at Bishop Manogue (Reno).
2015 belongs 6’10 Stephen Zimmerman. When its all said and done Zimmerman has a abilities to face the cover on several prep basketball publications and be in the discussion as one of the best big man to ever come out of the state of Nevada. UNLV, UCLA, Arizona, North Carolina, DUKE … too many to list have all shown high interest.
AAU Notes: Dream Vision tops my aau list this spring with early preseason Easter Classic and Jay Hawk Invitational tournament wins.
