Palo Verde attacked Cimarron with too manty P’s last night. Too much Pressure, too many points in the Paint and too many Players. Palo Verde was able to keep contant on the ball pressure while playing excellent weak side defense just as well. One of the few teams that have kept Olekaibe from consistent solid touches. Coach Jerome Riley kept throwing waves of fresh defenders at Olekaibe. Najee Matlock in particular who was the best defender on the floor. Sophomore Najee kept Olekaibe in front of him with every shot, big face hand contested. Matlock only scored 6 points for the night but his defense helped win the game for Palo Verde. Freshmen Sensation Eris Winder proved that he stands alone as the #1 player in the freshmen class this year in Vegas. Winder displayed great poise and ability to to run the team and make great decissions in a meaningful competive playoff game. Winder contantly made the hit aheads and dribble drive dishes to the right players throught the game. Winder finished with 9 points and several assist coming off the bench. DePaul signee Moses Morgan placed a stamp in the game with 19 points and some big time rebounds late in the game. Morgan played consistent and big from behind the arch and did his real damage insde the paint. Athletic forward Andrew Topham was dressed to play and scored 16 points while attacking the the offesive glass like a mad man.
Cimarron-Memorial out scored Palo in the first quarter 17-11 and had the early momentum but could not get over the hump late in the second half. They failed to locate players on the defense and gave up alot of free points in their half court defensisve set. Even with blown defensive assignments the Spartans kept the game compeititve and Kevin Olekaibe finished up with 27 points with a constant wave of defenders hanging all over him.
Palo Verde plays Bishop Grman tonight at 6:30 pm for the Sunset Regional Championship. Look for Palo to slow the game to a crawl while Gorman placing full court man to man pressusre to speed the game up.
