“Overlooked” — that’s the first word that comes to mind when I think of Kelly Oubre.

How?

Because most scouts, media, and such are paying more attention to either the competiton he is facing or other kids on his AAU team. His praises go unsung most of the time.

Kelly has a legitimate chance of being a pro with continued work.

He is a kid who deserves to be mentioned with anybody in the country. I couldn’t care less what rankings and others have to say. I know what I have seen with my own eyes, and I am calling this kid a top 10 talent in the country. Go ahead — name me ten other pros in the senior class this year. You can’t.

Look at the consistent body of work you get from Kelly every time he steps foot on the court.

A killer instinct bred from his New Orleans background. A toughness on the court that other players who so-called experts have ranked ahead of him don’t have. A mindset to destroy whoever is on the other side of the court.

To Kelly, this is business — it’s not just all fun and games because there are goals here at the end of the day. He has an ambition to compete one day at the highest level and have his name mentioned with the best players in the world.

When you have a driving force like that from inside, you start to slowly separate yourself from the pack. That is just what he is doing in the early part of the spring and summer.

We are talking about a kid who, in this last high school season, beat who we as basketball experts consider the measuring stick for greatness the last few years — the Harrison twins — not once, not twice, but three times!

Anyone who follows this game and truly knows it knows that this is a task that is almost impossible to accomplish against top-level competition.

What this tells us about Kelly Oubre is that this kid is more than just a great talent — he is a winner.

I look for him to continue to dominate and for many to jump on his bandwagon and say that they called it first and they saw it long before anybody else did. I’m telling you that this is where it’s headed because everybody likes to clam that they discovered the next great talent.

Kelly will continue to dominate all across this great country of ours and show anybody and everybody just how special a player he is.

I will leave you with this. In a few years, when we mention the name Kelly Oubre, there will be one word that best describes him: “PRO.”

1. Do you have a top ten list of schools? If so, please name them off.
Kelly Oubre: My top 11 is: UConn, Kansas, Florida, Louisville, Alabama, Arizona, UCLA, Baylor, Georgetown, Texas, and LSU.

2. What position do you see yourself playing in college?
Kelly Oubre: I see myself playing the 1,2, and 3 because I feel I can defend those spots just as effectively on defense.

3. Do you feel like your game is getting enough recognition from the coaches, scouts and media?
Kelly Oubre: The media attention has been building gradually. I would love to major in communications, or maybe even sports management, so I study the media personalities while they are interviewing me. Communicating effectively is very important to me.

4. When you think of college basketball, what are the first five schools that come to mind?
Kelly Oubre: I think of UConn, Louisville, Florida, Kansas, and UCLA because of their successful history.

5. Do you have any visits planned in the future? If so, with whom?
Kelly Oubre: I’m looking to take a few more unofficial visits before any officials just to get a better idea of what geographic region I want to represent.

6. Will you commit early or sign at the end of your senior year?
Kelly Oubre: I don’t have a timetable for a signing date.

7. Would you travel to the opposite coast to go to school?
Kelly Oubre: If I believe in a school and a program, and that school and their coach believe in me, I will travel anywhere.

8. Is staying close to home a good thing for you, or does it not matter at all?
Kelly Oubre: Staying close to home is not a big deal because I’ve traveled so much over the years that it has desensitized me to an extent.

9. McDonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand All-American: what would that mean to you?
Kelly Oubre: I would be honored greatly to receive invites from the McDonald’s and Jordan Brand representatives. I would also consider it a privilege and a great honor to represent my country as a member of USA Basketball.

10. What coaches have impressed you over the phone and in person, and why?
Kelly Oubre: Coaches Anthony Grant, Billy Donovan, Kevin Ollie, and Bill Self have impressed me the most.

11. Share with us your best game of the year.
Kelly Oubre: No one game sticks out, but the feelings that I have when I go off for thirty or more are special.

12. Give your family, friends and fans shout outs on PremierBall.com.
Kelly Oubre: I want to give shout outs to God, first and foremost, for all the blessings he has placed on me. Also, to my dad who has always believed in me and who has my best interest in mind always. Lastly, I want to shout out my mom, sister, and little brother back in New Orleans.

13. When you’re five feet from the rim with the ball in your hands, what the heck is going through your mind?
Kelly Oubre: Five feet away from the goal with the ball — hopefully I’m in transition and someone is trying to take a charge and they realize it’s poster time. If they are already in position, then I raise up and blaze up.

14. What are your strengths on the floor?
Kelly Oubre: My strengths on the floor are my leadership and my ability to keep defenses honest because I stretch them out.

15. How hard do you work on your game? How much time do you put in?
Kelly Oubre: My everyday routine consistis of 500-1000 shots, as time permits, and lifting weights either at school or at home.

16. When did you first pick up a ball?
Kelly Oubre: The day after I earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I started playing basketball.

17. Name the schools that are recruiting you the hardest.
Kelly Oubre: The schools recruiting me the hardest are UConn, Alabama, Kansas, UCLA, Florida, and Louisville.

18. What are your short term goals as a basketball player?
Kelly Oubre: My short term goals as a basketball player are to network with people all over the country and study successful styles.

19. What are some of the long term goals as a player?
Kelly Oubre: I want to play this game for as long as I can and I want to stay around this game for as long as I can after that. I also want to be a college graduate.

20. Give me the most memorable momment of your basketball career.
Kelly Oubre: The most memorable moment of my basketball career was when I led the city of Houston and the county of Fort Bend in scoring this high school year with 25.5 PPG and also had 11 RPG.

21. Who are some of the mentors that got you to where you are at right now?
Kelly Oubre: My dad is my mentor and my biggest fan. He says that he’s the big lion and I’m the little lion.

22. What gets your GAME ROCKING AND IN A GROOVE?
Kelly Oubre: The thing that gets my game rocking and in a groove is when I begin the game on fire offensively.

23. What is your nick name?
Kelly Oubre: My nickname is “Shot.” My dad gave it to me when I was seven years old.

24. Describe what some of your goals for the upcoming season are.
Kelly Oubre: My goals for this season are to crack the top 15 nationally, win a state title, and graduate with honors.

25 Tell the country what separates you from the rest of the elite forwards and guards.
Kelly Oubre: Playing against the guys that have been considered to be the best motivates me to play at my best even more so.

26. What does it mean to you being ranked as one of the top players in the country?
Kelly Oubre: It means a lot to be ranked with the best because I feel confident in my ability and deserving.

27. Academically, how do you stand right now, and how important is this to you and your family?
Kelly Oubre: Academically, I am doing great. As of my last report card, I had 2 As, 4 Bs, and a C. Pre-cal is tough though.

28. Who would you compare your game to?
Kelly Oubre: I think my game resembles Kobe, LeBron, Melo, and Michael Jordan all rolled up into one.

29. Whose game do you look up to?
Kelly Oubre: I look up to Michael Jordan, the player and the businessman.

30. Describe yourself and your game as a player.
Kelly Oubre: I am passionate in everything I do on and off the court.

31. What are your strengths?
Kelly Oubre: My strengths are leadership, determination, passion, desire, and loyalty.

32. You beat the Harrison twins three times last yea. Break that down for us a little.
Kelly Oubre: I approached the games against the Harrisons with the mindset that I would not be outworked on either end of the floor. I respect those guys, and now I know that they respect me because I can see it in their eyes when were in the same circles. Game recognizes game.

33. Who is the best player you ever played against?
Kelly Oubre: The best player I ever played against is Andrew Wiggins.

34. What edge does being from New Orleans give to your game and to who you are as a person?
Kelly Oubre: Being from New Orleans is a blessing because the city is so rich in tradition and the people are so genuine. As I look at the ups and downs that the city experiences, I can’t help but think of the day that I can go back and help those who will appreciate it. Basketball is opening doors to new places and helping me build relationships that may last a long time. I want to be the best and I will be the best. No disrespect, but my time is now.

35. Five years from now Kelly Oubre will be…?
Kelly Oubre: Five years from now, Kelly Oubre will be a committed basketball player in the National Basketball Association, prepared to take on the world.

Tell us anything else about yourself that you might want people to know that they might not.
Kelly Oubre: My favorite poem is “If We Must Die” by Claude McKay.

If we must die—let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die—oh, let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
Oh, Kinsmen! We must meet the common foe;
Though far outnumbered, let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

I think about it before every game because it gives me a mental edge.
