Clash of the Titans

This Saturdays matchup between prep school powerhouse Findlay Prep and Nevada’s  version of Goliath, Bishop Gorman, at the Orleans Arena Saturday December 12,  at 8pm, is just what the Las Vegas valley needs to put Las Vegas back on the nations hoop radar. This game boasts some of the areas top players in Tristan Thompson, Corey Joseph, Nick Johnson and Jabari Brown from Findlay Prep and Shabazz Muhammed, Roscoe Allen, Anson Winder,Ben Carter and John Lloyd from Bishop Gorman (all of which are attracting D1 attention). This match up conjure up memories of the match ups that many in the valley used to watch in the late 70’s and early 80’s, with players the likes of Freddie Banks, Freddie ” machine gun ” Thompson, Pace Mannion, Mike “spider man”  Burns and  ” sudden” Sam Smith, just to name a few.

Las Vegas has not seen a match up of this magnitude since Chaparral and Bishop Gorman collided at the old Gorman high school Campus on Maryland Parkway in early 1979, when both programs were on the verge of national rankings with the talent they had back  then. Many will say whats the big deal, its just a game and that we all can agree to an extent. However Findlay was the National Prep School champion last year beating out Oak Hill for the title, Bishop Gorman, like it or not has consistently over the last three to four years began their ascent into a potential national ranking and possibly if all things come together, a place amongst the regions elite teams. With that being said, there is one other program not fortunate to play on a stage like this yet that bodes mentioning and that is Cheyenne High School. Cheyenne has for the last five years produced D1 talent the likes of Elijah Johnson, Demetrick Williams and most recently Chris McCall and Jalen Henry (maybe Cheyenne plays Findlay next year?).

Lets all get out to the game saturday and support this event as a vegas’s national coming out party.
