As high school basketball players played for the past five months with there school teams where scouts and writers could not wait to observe them playing out of that element, in some cases. Friday night at Phoenix College six teams played on opening night in the Phoenix Spring League. The league runs until Easter and gives club teams a chance to play prior to Easter weekend when the club season officially starts.
Teams in the league are AZ SKLZ, TEAM M’PHASIS, FASTBREAKERS ELITE, GOLDEN GATORS ELITE, CTB, THE DEMONS, CHANNING FRYE ELITE, ARIZONA STARS-HOPKINS, 3G HOOPS, FASTBREAKERS 15U, C. FRYE 16U, GOLDEN GATORS GOLD and the ARIZONA DREAM TEAM. Games will be played on Friday evenings at Phoenix College.
The first game featured The AZ SKIZ and C. Frye 16U. It was a very close game as lead changes seemed to favor the AZ SKLZ. “Junior Keegan Collins (Cactus Shadows) played a solid game and helped us with some key rebounds.” Said Brad Leech, AZ SKLZ coach. Collins was also given help by seniors Austin Kelchner and Ben Leech who are looking to showcase themselves this spring and summer in trying to gain a basketball scholarship. AZ SKILZ won 52-46. Scoring 16 points for C. Frye were freshman Kenny Lacy (Cesar Chavez) and 8th grade point guard Darvis Fletcher (South Pointe) led the team with 8 assists.
