BISHOP GORMAN REPEATS WITH VICTORY OVER CANYON SPRINGS!!

Bishop Gorman continues to dominate Nevada 4A basketball with their second championship in a row. #13  Bishop Gorman made a serious case for having its best team in school history going 30-2 for the year.

Gorman played an aggressive full court game and treated the athletic Canyon Springs like any other team. Canyon Springs looked solid in the first half with strong finishes and good perimeter shooting. The second half they were turn over prone and could not finish in the paint over the Gaels lentgh, size and athletism. Bishop Gorman’s second half defensive dominance made the game a 20 point gap in the second half.

Here are the notes on the players that caught my attention.

PoP Notes:

6′7 275 pound (Bishop Gorman)Ronnie Stanley was the player that took many by surprise. Stanley scored 4 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal in 3 minutes of key action in the game. The previous semifinal game Stanley ripped it up with 14 points and played big on defense. Stanley made a case for himself as the 2010-2011 starter next year. Stanley possesses good footwork  with the combination of freakish size and excellent post moves.

Sophomore sensation (Bishop Gorman)Shabazz Muhammad opened the game with a dunk, to quickly dispel the Canyon Springs full court trap. Muhammad played well all around by rebounding in traffic, finishing on breaks and playing exceptionally well on the defensive end. Muhammad finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 1 blocked shot.

(Bishop Gorman)John Loyd the catalyst played a very cerebral second half which increased the Gorman gap to 20 plus at one point. Lloyd’s shot was off but he disturbed the ball for finishes and played solid defense. Loyd finished with 9 points, 5 assists and only 1 turnover. Loyd is unsigned and we have him billed as the #1 player in the 2010 Class.

BYU signee (Bishop Gorman)Anson Winder who had 5 to’s made up for them with a balanced floor game and pit bull like defense. Winder finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and a game high 6 assists. Looked as if Winder was physically hurt at times on the floor. Winder will be an impact player for the Cougars next year as he will play for Coach Rice’s brother Dave Rice.

(Bishop Gorman)Taylor Spenser was dynamic last night. Showed why he was placed so high on the 2010 List-

Spenser has decided to play football at UNLV & has placed a stamp in Bishop Gorman basketball history by winning state titles in Basketball and in Football this year. Spenser plays the game like a world class athlete. Not fully polished but his athleticism makes up for it. Spencer has an “I will not loose!” attitude and lead all scorers with 19 points and five monstrous dunks the literally took the momentum from Canyon Springs.

Canyon Springs Senior stars Jeremy Alexander and Adrian Snow both struggled mostly due to strength. They combined for 6pts and 8 rebounds for the game. Both players are wiry and athletic and have great potential with added strength and contiued skill set devolopement. Alexadner who is the most athletic player in the state and Snow who is a double double player never got on track.

Canyon Springs Jr. Guard/Forward Jared Brandon looked promising with a deep three which showed good range and also had some nice moves that lead to even stronger finishes. Brandon who is a Jr. will return next year and should be placed on the radar. Brandon rebounds good and shoots and handles the ball well at 6′4.

DJ Anderson competed and distributed the ball efficiently. Anderson stays within the frame work of the offense and gets the ball to the right players.

Anderson who finished up with 16 points, kept the game close for the first half but was unable to stop Gorman’s smothering defense in the second half.

Canyon Springs Michael Thompson shined in the open court. Thompson shot the ball well from the floor but  only shot 3 free throws for the game. Would be nice to see him finish over the top with dunks in traffic, maybe next year. Thompson off the dribble is unstoppable with his change of  speed and ability to go hard to the basket against high major compittion. Thompson shot 6 for 14 from the field.

Final score was 48-69 Bishop Gorman wins state-
